Our Art Workshops

It’s been an fabulous start to the year here at Daniel Barnett Arts Foundation with several art workshops complete and many more planned throughout the year. 2020 marks our 10 Year Anniversary and we aim to make it our most memorable year yet.

In January we were able to fund a new project for our local hospice 💜 Rotherham Hospice helping bereaved children through art.

The artist was given the brief to help small groups of mixed age children with issues of grief related anger. The idea of homemade stress balls was suggested.

Firstly we talked about feelings and designed faces with their own interpretation of confusion, sadness, rage etc. The balls are made from balloons and the children went through the whole process of measuring various ingredients. They also experimented with a Non-Newtonian fluid; mixing cornstarch and water. They 100% found this to be the best bit!!

When the balloons were tied. They visited the hair salon where wacky wool hair was added and faces drawn on from their original designs. They made several stress balls using different combinations.

After a break we used to opportunity to design a picture/poem/portrait for their special person. This was put in a frame case to keep it private for the children.

All the children had a positive experience from the session and took all of their creations home with them. We encouraged the children take pride and comfort from their work, to display their stress ball creations at home and to talk about them (& all the feelings they might convey) with their family and friends whenever they feel the need to.

Chinese New Year!

At Leeds LGI we marked Chinese new year with a specialised workshop celebrating the year of the rat.

We made chinese lantern sun catchers with tissue paper, and wool tassels, fireworks pictures using lots of glitter and little paper folded mice/rats.

They also made some lovely watercolour mountain pictures with decorated Chinese lanterns.

The children really engaged with the Chinese new year theme and enjoyed some much needed respite from the physical and emotional hardships which face them every day.
